The City of Show Low announces recruitment for the position of Water Safety Instructor.

  • Salary: $13.80 per hour with lifeguard certification

The Job

Assume certain responsibilities primarily with the development of beginning to advanced swimmers and the successful teaching of swimming strokes and techniques. The Water Safety Instructor reports to the Aquatics Director with the indirect supervision by the Community Services Supervisor. The Water Safety Instructor directs all phases of teaching to ensure the safety of all that participate. The Water Safety Instructor performs other duties as assigned or directed. The Water Safety Instructor is responsible for:

  • Caring for all of the equipment used
  • Preparing the swimming facility for lessons
  • Preparing lesson instructions and lesson times


Working knowledge of swimming strokes and practices. Qualifications include the ability to:

  • Effectively meet and deal with the public
  • Communicate verbally and in writing
  • Handle stressful situations

Applicant must be a:

  • Able to work morning, early afternoon, late afternoon, and evening hours as determined by the swim lesson schedule
  • Self-starter capable of following through on assignments and duties assigned
  • Strong swimmer and work well with others


If necessary we will train qualified applicants. Preferred certifications include:

  • CPR
  • First Aid
  • Lifeguard Training
  • Water Safety Instructor

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of an application screening with the most qualified candidates being invited to participate in a personal interview. Appointment is subject to successful completion of background investigation as well as a city-paid, pre-employment, post-offer physical examination, and drug screening.
