Police Department

Investigations Division                                       

The Investigations Division of the department is made up of two Detectives, two School Resource Officers, one Detective assigned to the Drug Task Force, one Evidence Technician and one Supervisor.  The Division is responsible for general investigations, which includes narcotics and street gangs.

Following are highlights of the above investigation areas (statistics from 2004):

General Investigations:

  • Was assigned 375 new cases:  259 were cleared, 131 were cleared by arrest.

  • Prepared and served numerous search warrants, resulting in the recovery of thousands of dollars of property, drugs and other contraband of crimes being recovered.

  • Recovered more than $17,000 in stolen property.

  • Investigated more than 25 alleged sex-related crimes.

  • Implemented a case management system in which any pending felony cases are assigned to a detective and followed up on until the case is cleared.

  • Filled more than 130 felony complaints in 2004.

Narcotics Investigation - MCAT:

  • Assisted in state and nationwide DEA operations.

  • Followed up on SLPD drug-related crimes.

  • Investigated prescription abuse/fraud cases.

  • Participated in major drug-related crime investigations.

  • Assisted local agencies with undercover operations, securing of crime scenes, and search and arrest warrants.

  • Made knock-and-talk visits to residences with suspicious activities.

School Resource Officers:

  • Two School Resource Officers and one part-time D.A.R.E. Officer from uniform patrol participate in School Resource programs.

  • One officer is assigned to K - 8 schools, and one officer is assigned to the High School.

  • The High School SRO has initiated a law-related education class in which students receive high school credit for attending the class.

  • SROs are responsible for other programs in the community, such as Shop with a COP and Trunk or Treat.

  • During the summer semester break, SROs assist investigations with caseloads, special investigations and field investigations. SROs also help Patrol during this time.
